The natural beauty and relaxed pace of the Outer Banks not only attracts thousands of visitors every year, but also serves as inspiration and a retreat-like home for many artists. Outer Banks art galleries are filled with the works of regional and local artists, including such artists as nationally recognized watercolorist Russell Yerkes, known for his fish paintings.

While paintings of the local landscapes and wildlife occupy a large portion of the works, the offerings run the gamut from classical works to conceptual arts, and include mediums such as oil, wood, metal and glass. Several of the artists offer lessons and or allow visitors into their studios to watch them at work.

The Outer Banks boasts nearly 50 commercial art and craft galleries and a dozen private art galleries. In addition to highlighting the works of local artists, some of the private Outer Banks art galleries also sponsor art shows and festivals.

For instance, the Ghost Fleet Gallery in Nags Head hosts the annual Dare County Arts Council's Frank Stick Memorial Art Show, which showcases over 150 works of art. The Ghost Fleet Gallery is owned by Glenn and Pat Eure and features Glenn's work and works of other Outer Banks artists. Glenn works in a multitude of media including etching, woodcutting, and painting (watercolor, oil and acrylic). The Ghost Fleet Gallery resides among Gallery Row in Nags Head and remains open all year long, with shorter hours in January and February.

Several Outer Banks art galleries are located on Gallery Row in Nags Head, including the Morales Art Gallery, which is owned by Mitchell and Christine Lively. Morales Art Gallery was opened by the late Jesse Morales in 1971, and assisted many struggling artists by showcasing their works of art. With three locations, the gallery currently displays the works of Larry Johnson, Pat Williams, and Pat Trojani, among others, and houses a major collection of original seascapes. The gallery is open all year.

Another Nags Head gallery is the Yellowhouse Gallery Annex. This gallery displays antique maps and prints, including thousands of etchings and lithographs of old Nags Head. In addition, maps and prints from the Civil War are on display along with old charts of the Outer Banks. Yellowhouse Gallery's collection of prints is huge. Visitors seeking a specific item can contact the gallery owner, Uncle Jack, who will happily order that item.

The Sea and Sounds Gallery in Manteo is another of the Outer Banks art galleries that hosts shows. As the show space for the Dare County Arts Council (DCAC), this gallery holds a show every month, including group shows, individual shows and competitions. The Sea and Sounds is also the headquarters for the DCAC, and is a great place for visitors to pick up information on the Outer Banks arts.

In addition to housing the DCAC offices, Manteo also hosts the annual New World Festival of Arts in August. Located on Manteo's waterfront, the festival exhibits the works of as many as 80 local and national artists. Paintings, photography, and handcrafted items are among the long list of items on display.

Artist Mary Kaye Umberger displays her art work all year in her gallery, Dolphin Watch Gallery, which is located in Corolla on the northern edge of the Outer Banks. Ms. Umberger specializes in hand-colored etchings on handmade paper. Subjects of her work include the sites sounds of Corolla; wildlife ducks, seascapes, and lighthouses. Pottery, carvings, and stoneware are also on exhibit. Though the gallery is open all year, hours vary, especially during the off-season. Call ahead for specifics.

In Duck, the Greenleaf Gallery offers painting and fine crafts from approximately 300 local, regional, and national artists. Owner Rick Tupper's paintings are on display, along with handcrafted jewelry, ceramics, glass, sculpture, acrylic and watercolor paintings, lithographs, and etchings. Greenleaf is known for carrying both serious pieces and fun, whimsical pieces, such as a huge praying mantis. The gallery is open Mid-March through December, and is closed on Sundays.

For those art lovers who wish to view local artists, Kill Devil Hills (KDH) Cooperative Gallery and Studios (252 441-9888) is the place to visit. This gallery is the dream-come-true of artist Julie Moye. An artist-operated cooperative, the KDH gallery exhibits works of 29 local artists. Various media are on display, including oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastels, pen and ink, glass, metal, fiber, candles, and pottery.

The artists themselves help run the gallery by assisting customers, and serving on a panel to organize shows. The second floor of the cooperative is studio space, the Artists Attic, where the artists paint or sculpt, and entertain questions from visitors. Also on the second floor are a series of classrooms, where adults and children can take classes in drawing, pottery, glass-making, and many other art media.
