The original part of the building was constructed in 1874 as the Kitty Hawk Lifesaving Station. The station was manned by one keeper and a crew of six surfmen whose sole purpose was to rescue those who succumbed to the dangerous waters along the Banks.

Our experience

Once the pop music was turned down at my request, the atmosphere was nice. Ann and I both had the house salad topped with grilled tuna - a most excellent lunch. The Black Pelican seems to be a popular place and that seems logical considering we've been there twice and both times the experiences were extremely good. We haven't tried the desserts but from the looks of the dessert choices we saw on our way out, we're definitely going to do dessert the next time.
